“Tora, Tora” means “Tiger, Tiger” (or “Tyger, Tyger”) in Japanese.
“Tora” is also an abbreviation for totsugeki raigeki, or “lightning attack,” the codeword used to initiate Japan’s 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.
Tigers are not indigenous to Japan, but were often depicted in Edo-period artworks, symbolizing power and government.
Power and government are also represented by chrysanthemums, the national flower of Japan, used on Japanese passports and as the imperial seal.
