The Atacama is the driest desert on Earth, partly because of a double rain shadow caused by the Chilean Coastal Range to the West and the Andes to the East. During the residency, we lived in a small oasis with greenery sustained by a monthly controlled flood, alongside llamas, goats, sheep, chickens, cats, and dozens of dogs.
